??? ??? ??? il parlerait d'un nouveau RS 800, olympique ???
I do not think the numbers would be likely to reduced in the RS 800 due to Olympic status like the Europe etc.
I think it would be a positive thing like it is for the Laser and the Radial.
The reason the 49er circuit is low turnout is it is a hard boat to sail (unlike a Laser) so the professionals have a real advantage.
I guess the main issue is if you are concerned about getting your arse kicked by girls, something I am getting used to .

I think you have to be careful when you make changes to classes. One of the reasons why people are attracted to the class is that you know that when you buy any boat you have a chance of winning irrespective of your wallet size.
The more changes you make the more you de-value the second hand market and you split the fleet, irrelevant that it's only a new kite, extra hole and a new kite sock.
Actually, you'd have to re-drill the down haul blocks, change your spinnaker halyard, sheets, might have to raise the racks to get it to fit under?. I reckon you'd be looking at £1000 in total.
Now tell the class you're changing the kite size and see who stays with the old system.
All that to go a bit faster in a boat that is considered by most of the sailing community as out of control and 'speedy.'
Sorry Tom, not convinced.
The class is a great boat with the good sized kite and it works. If people want a bigger boat go and sail a Int 14! The 800 fits a niche that works.
We might think that it's 'too easy' but that is not the opinion of people joining the class. Make it too hard and we loose new blood.
The boat is an 800, race it and try to beat everyone else. It's a simple concept.

A question: if LDC were to bring out an RS800 XL that perhaps had a
larger rig and wider racks and therefore faster as the XL prefix
implies, how many crews, would wish to upgrade to it?
I know Chris and I would be tempted as I am certain would many others.
The hull certainly could certainly handle a larger rig, particularly in
the kite department. But would that not take people away from the
current 800 class?
On the other hand, If LDC's plan is to bring out a "detuned" version of
the 800 (maybe called the 800 XS) for the Women's Olympics then I think
Martin is right that no current 800 teams would wish to change to it.
This is borne out by the popularity of the single trapeze version of the
800 - when was the last time you saw one of those?

Women's Olympic Skiff Trials
You may well have heard that ISAF (International Sailing Federation) are
planning to hold a trial for a potential women's Olympic skiff class.
We, LDC Racing Sailboats, have been encouraged by ISAF to take part in
the trials. We are considering this and would work in partnership with
Vanguard Sailboats in the USA to develop a new boat based on one of our
existing models - Vanguard's Vector or the RS800. The first step would
be to choose the model to develop.
If we choose to develop the RS800 for the possible Olympic slot we would
then make a number of changes specifically to suit this role. The
changes are a long way from being defined yet and may include the rig,
racks and deck layout. Completely separate class rules and events would
be required. The class would probably be named with a suffix, for
example RS800 XL, in line with some of our other boats.
We believe that a separate class would not affect the events and success
of the RS800. There are no current 800 teams likely to be drawn into the
new fleet - it would not be possible for Olympic sailors to compete in
RS800 events without changing boats.
This project has a very long way to go:
Choice of boat to develop
Trials
Selection
MAJOR hurdle for ISAF to deselect an existing class to make way for a
women's skiff for the 2012 Games. It's actually an even bigger hurdle
than that because sailing has to go down from 11 to 10 classes in 2012
anyway.
If all that lot went our way, then the major benefit would be
internationalisation (is that a word) of the RS name plus steady, if not
huge, sales of a new class.
The purpose of this message is to keep you informed of our deliberations
and ask that you contact us if you have any comments. We want you to
know that we are acutely aware of the strength and success of the RS800
fleet and, as you already know, we are already committed to working with
the Class to build on that.
